The Uninvited guest by deb kennedy
When Dealing with Health
What do you do with a new guest –
One who was not invited but comes to camp in your home anyway
And makes herself known in the most annoying ways?
What can you do when she damages things you hold dear?
Takes some things you love most?
Disrupts your schedule and even alters
the road you thought you were to travel?
What do you say?
You might try reason, or anger or a tantrum.
Not life giving and most ineffective.
She is obviously very comfortable.
Instead, perhaps start with thank you.
Thank you, God, for this new teacher.
For the new lessons to learn -
For the new ways this guest will cause me to be present.
Thank you for all of the new ways she is teaching me to be-
for the noticing she brings.
Thank you for the small things and the wonder of complexity.
Thank you for the ‘I Can’ instead of the ‘I can’t’.
Thank you for the details of our life’s existence-
For the amazing ways in which our body is created,
So many intricacies of design beyond imagining,
All working together to give us being.
Thank you for this new day and all it may bring.
And then –
You must make the guest as comfortable as possible
As you both learn to live together.
