“They All Wore Their Scarves” by Kate Young Wilder
Art Installation featured at ArtPrize 2022, Roeda Studio, Grand Rapids, MI
As I have read the news from the assaults on Ukraine, I have been moved by the photographs of elderly women being transported from the ruins of their homes. I see the colors and patterns of their traditional scarves beneath bundled layers of old blankets piled on for warmth. I see fear. I see dignity. It is my hope that in these close up images--sometimes beautiful and sometimes garish--you will enter into their nightmare and hold these women with love and strength. Look into their eyes. Hold their spirit in your spirit. Pray for peace.
Note: “Art Prize is an open, international art competition which has taken place in Grand Rapids, Michigan since 2009. Since its inception, millions have participated in ArtPrize, displaying their work, and sparking countless conversations about what art is and why it matters.”
Note: Contemplative art is important. And because justice and action are also important, please join me in supporting the work of World Central Kitchen whose teams are feeding thousands of Ukranian refugees each day.
